Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra presented: impressions, specifications, prices

Samsung introduced its flagship smartphones Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra. The presentation took place as part of the event Unpacked in San Francisco. At the same time, journalists and bloggers had the opportunity to get acquainted with new products in Ukraine as part of a local event.

In addition to the Galaxy S line, the company updated its range of smartphones with a bendable display – the Galaxy Z Flip model was announced, and they also showed new Galaxy Buds+ wireless headphones. Let’s start the cycle of materials with the main line.

Why S20 and not S11?

Nominally, in order, yes – this is the eleventh generation of Galaxy S smartphones. After the anniversary last year, apparently, it was decided to create a tradition in numbering according to the current year of release. At least it will be more convenient to count future new products. Representatives of the company also say that they wanted to emphasize the new decade of smartphones in the names.

The model names mostly reflect the key features of each version. The S20+ has a slightly larger screen diagonal, while the S20 Ultra has the most sophisticated sensor unit with support for that “wow” zoom.

Appearance and ergonomics

In the S20s, the main improvements were cameras and displays; the design and other characteristics are close and echo those of previous generations.

Moreover, the models are not “cut down” or “improved” versions of any of them. They are now absolutely original and independent in terms of use cases. Like laptops, with similar hardware but different displays, for example.

From the front, smartphones are still visible thanks to the bright screen with curved side edges. The frames on the sides seem to have become a little thinner, by fractions of a millimeter, but not so much that when held with one hand, the palm touches the display, preventing the sensor from working. There are small stripes left on the top and bottom, and the bottom one is also a little larger.

The most noticeable design changes are on the back of the case. The main camera block has become more massive and protrudes outwards; a bumper or cover should come to its “aid”. In the photo above you can see how it has increased from the S20 to the S20 Ultra.

The case is protected from water and dust according to IP68.

Smartphones are quite weighty and fit well in the hand. The ergonomics here are imperfect only from the point of view of the slippery and scratchy glass surface.

In Ukraine, smartphones will be sold in the following colors:

• Galaxy S20: space gray, sky blue, glow red
• Galaxy S20+: space gray, space black, glow red
• Galaxy S20 Ultra: space gray and space black

Equipment

In the minimum configuration, all models have an Exynos 990 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 12 GB of RAM and a 128 GB storage with microSD expandability up to 1 TB.

The “plus” and “ultra” modifications can also be equipped with a 256 or 512 GB drive. The S20 Ultra, in general as a gaming PC, can have 16 GB of RAM in the top.

They also have larger batteries – 4500 mAh and 5000 mAh versus 4000 mAh for the S20. There is support for wireless and fast wired charging up to 25 W and up to 45 W for the S20 Ultra.

The speaker and external speakers are traditionally certified by AKG.

Android 10 with One UI 2.0 shell is installed. There is support for dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, popular navigation systems, etc.

Note that the Galaxy S20 Ultra is now very close to the Galaxy Note line and now the latter will be distinguished only by the S-Pen digital pen.

The front camera is now single for everyone. In the S20 and S20+ its resolution is 10 megapixels, and in the S20 Ultra it is 40 megapixels. It is placed in a cutout in the center of the screen, on top, and takes up even fewer pixels compared to the Galaxy S10.

The main modules are the main difference between the S20 versions. Moreover, all three can record 8K video using telephoto lenses, and in the S20 Ultra this is also done on the main 108-megapixel sensor.

• The S20 has: 12 megapixel wide-angle, 64 megapixel telephoto (3x optical zoom) and 12 megapixel ultra-wide-angle
• In S20+ installed: everything is the same and added DepthVision depth sensors
• The S20 Ultra has: 108 MP wide-angle, 12 MP ultra-wide-angle, 48 MP telephoto with a periscope design. Supports up to 4x optical, 10x to 30x hybrid and 100x digital zoom.

Prices for the Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra are shown in the table for the lower trim levels:  26,999 UAH, 29,999 UAH and 37,999 UAH, respectively.
