Deepcool DN650

The presented Deepcool DN650 power supply is an updated modification in the DN line of Deepcool power supplies. On the company website we will additionally mark it with the prefix New. This power supply appeared around the spring of 2017.

DN650 is a relatively affordable power supply (taking into account power).

External inspection

The power supply comes with a power cord and a set of mounting bolts. Everything is standard here.

The fact that this power supply belongs to the budget class is immediately revealed by the non-modular design (the wires cannot be detached) and the absence of an overhead “grill” for the fan. The slots here are stamped directly onto the body panel.

A 120mm fan is used to blow air.

All wires are covered with braid.

Judging by our measurements, the information about the length of the wires on the official website should not be trusted. It appears that the data has been mixed up with a very similar model, the Deepcool DA650.

Deepcool DN650 wire configuration

Connectors Wire length, cm
20+4 pin ATX 50
4+4-pin ATX12V 60
6+2-pin PCIe—6+2-pin PCIe 50—14
6+2-pin PCIe—6+2-pin PCIe 50—14
Molex—Molex—SATA—SATA 50—14—14—14
SATA—SATA—SATA—Molex 50—14—14—14

There are four additional power connectors for video cards. They are placed in pairs on two wires and they all have a convenient 6+2-pin PCIe format.

The length of the wires is generally sufficient. The only thing that confuses us is the rather small distance between “neighboring” video card power supplies. In ordinary computers there will be no problems with this, but when installing video cards in a mining rig will not be able to create a good gap between the boards.

Please also note that not only the video card connectors, but also the power connector for the 4+4-pin ATX12V processor and the 20+4 pin ATX motherboard have a composite design. This adds versatility.

Technical features

The Deepcool DN650 power supply is declared to comply with the 80 PLUS 230V EU standard (indicating high efficiency). This is quite good, but it is only the basic standard today. 80 PLUS Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium units have higher energy efficiency.

This power supply does not belong to the so-called Full Range models with a wide input voltage range (100–240 V). Here the lower input threshold is limited to 200 V. In places with problematic power supply, inconvenience may occur.

Характеристики Deepcool DN650

The unit has protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, short circuit and overload.

Quite in accordance with the class of the device, one can see a relatively simple design with group voltage stabilization.

The Deepcool DN650 power supply is equipped with a 12 cm Yate Loon D12SH-12 fan

With a total power supply of 650 W, the total line load on the +12 V lines should not exceed 600 W. For example, more advanced power supplies usually do not have such restrictions.

Checking it at work

The fan operating mode involves changing the rotation speed depending on the temperature, which, in turn, is mainly determined by the degree of power load. According to official data, the fan speed varies approximately in the range from 900 to 1800 rpm.

If you do not power mining farm, then most of the time in your system the power supply will be practically undetectable in terms of noise. When approaching maximum loads, the noise becomes noticeable, but it is within reasonable limits.

To capture stress levels under various loads, we used a system based on an Intel Core i7-3770K processor and two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards. It is worth considering that the power indicated in the table is the power recorded at the input of the power supply unit.

Power +12V line +5 V line +3.3 V line
28 W +12.24 V +5.11 V +3.4 V
100 W +12.19 V +5.12 V +3.39 V
360 W +11.95 V +5.14 V +3.36 V
530 W +11.75 V +5.14 V +3.36 V
530 W +11.7 V (measured in the 6+2-pin PCIe connector)
570 W +11.69 V +5.18 V +3.35 V
570 W +11.65 V (measured in the 6+2-pin PCIe connector)

It is noticeable how the voltage of the +12 V circuits drops as the load approaches the maximum power level of the power supply, but the level does not go beyond the permissible limits of +- 5% (11.4–12.6 V).

At high loads of video cards (and they were the main consumers in the test PC), we monitored +12 V in two places: on the 20+4 pin ATX connector for the motherboard and on one of the 6+2-pin PCIe connectors for the video card. You can notice that in the 6+2-pin block the voltage was slightly lower. But the voltage difference is insignificant. If it were large, then to some extent we could talk about increased resistance of the wires.

There were also no critical deviations observed in the +5 V and +3.3 V branches.

Conclusions

Deepcool DN650 does not have any frills such as advanced circuitry, detachable wires, backlighting, but for its price it has quite adequate characteristics, design and features.

If you plan to use the Deepcool DN650 in mining rigs, you can expect to work with even four graphics cards. True, these should be very modest video cards in terms of energy consumption. Something like a GTX 1050 Ti or, with the right power settings, a GTX 1060.

When the system has no more than two video cards, then these can be almost any model with the exception of the particularly power-hungry AMD Radeon Vega 64. The capabilities of the Deepcool DN650, in general, are enough to power a system with two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, but the power may approach maximum under load. It’s better to still have some reserve.

And for gaming PCs, unless these are some very extreme systems, the DN650 will have enough power to spare.

Main characteristics of Deepcool DN650:
